But the great variety of furniture to which we are accustomed is unknown. The poor of course had correspondingly less. A mat or a skin to recline on during the day, a mattress to sleep on at night, a stool, a little low table, and a brazier, — this would be the extent of the furniture. It is interesting to observe that the rich Shunammite furnished the room of Elisha with simply a bed — perhaps merely a mattress — a table, a stool (chair), and a candlestick. 2 Kgs 4:10-13. The word "furniture" is used in Gen 31:34 of the camel-trappings.
