Common questions

Is this Bible dictionary free?

Yes. All 1,129 entries are free to read here, with no account and no email. The same definitions sit on the verse you are reading in the Protos app, where reading, notes and highlights cost nothing, and premium adds the full study library.

What is a Bible dictionary?

A reference for what a word, person or place means in Scripture rather than what it means in modern English. Each entry here also lists every passage where the term carries that sense, so you can check the definition against the text.

Where do these definitions come from?

The definitions are from STEPBible, published by Tyndale House Cambridge under CC BY 4.0, lightly edited for length and formatting. Protos compiles the verse list for each entry and keeps names apart when they belong to more than one person or place. Israel the man has his own entry. So does Israel the nation.

Read it in context

Every entry, attached to the verse you are reading.

Protos puts these definitions on the passage you are reading, so you never look a name up and then have to find your place again.

The Protos reader open on Genesis 1 with the How to Read Genesis background sheet raised over it
"People don't give up on the Bible for lack of discipline. They give up because they don't understand what they read. So they skim past it and jump straight to what it means for them, before they have listened to what God is saying through the words, the story, and the voice of the writer. It happens so often that theology has a name for it: eisegesis."

Protos is the answer to that. Every explanation you read was written by a scholar and published in a reference work, credited right on the page.

The streak feature actually got people in my congregation excited to read, especially the youth. We've started comparing notes after service.
