Where this comes from

Every word of the reference text was written by a scholar and published before it ever reached us, and every page says which work its definition came from.

Using and citing these

Use them. Quote them, print them, put them in a handout, work through a guide with your group. You do not need permission and you do not need to check with us first.

If you reproduce an entity article at length, the Tyndale House material is licensed CC BY 4.0, which asks you to credit Tyndale House and link the licence. Everything else on this page is public domain. Quoting a line and linking the page needs nothing from you.

Common questions

Are these Bible study tools free?

Yes, all of them. The 1,129 dictionary entries, the commentary on all 66 books, the 3 reading plans and the 3 printable study guides are free to read and download. There is no account, no email required, and nothing is held back behind a signup.

Can I use these with my small group or church?

Yes. The study guides were written for exactly that: 16 sessions across Romans, Mark, James, with discussion questions, printable as PDFs. You do not need permission to use them with a group, and you do not need to tell us.

Can I quote or link to these pages?

Yes, and you do not need to ask. Most of the material is public domain. The Tyndale House entity articles are licensed CC BY 4.0, which asks that you credit Tyndale House and link the licence if you reproduce that text at length. Quoting a line and linking the page needs nothing from you.

Where do the definitions come from?

Published reference works, named on every page they appear on: Tyndale House via STEPBible, Hastings', Easton's, Smith's and Schaff-Herzog for the dictionary, Tyndale Open Study Notes for the book commentary with Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Judges, TBESH and Abbott-Smith for Hebrew and Greek. Every word of it was written by a scholar and published before it ever reached us. Every entry says which work it came from.

Read it in context

All of this, on the verse you are reading.

Protos puts the same dictionary, commentary and original languages on the verse in front of you, instead of making you go and look them up.

The Protos reader open on Genesis 1 with the How to Read Genesis background sheet raised over it
"People don't give up on the Bible for lack of discipline. They give up because they don't understand what they read. So they skim past it and jump straight to what it means for them, before they have listened to what God is saying through the words, the story, and the voice of the writer. It happens so often that theology has a name for it: eisegesis."

Protos is the answer to that. Every explanation you read was written by a scholar and published in a reference work, credited right on the page.

The streak feature actually got people in my congregation excited to read, especially the youth. We've started comparing notes after service.
