What does the Bible say about Rabbi?
Rabbi, sometimes spelled Rabboni, is a title of respect used in the Jewish community to address religious teachers and leaders. The term "Rabbi" literally means "my teacher" or "my master" in Hebrew. In the Gospels, Jesus is often addressed as Rabbi by His disciples and others who recognized His authority as a teacher (Matthew 26:25, 49; Mrk.9.5; 11:21; 14:45; Jhn.1.38, 49; 4:31; 9:2; 11:8). Jesus warned His followers not to seek the title of Rabbi for themselves, as they were all brothers and had one Teacher, the Christ (Matthew 23:7-8). He emphasized the importance of humility and servanthood rather than seeking positions of status and honor. In John's Gospel, the title Rabboni (which means "my teacher" in Aramaic) is used by Mary Magdalene when she recognizes the risen Jesus outside the tomb (Jhn.20.16). This title expresses her deep respect and devotion to Him as her teacher and Lord. The use of the title Rabbi in the Gospels reflects the Jewish cultural context in which Jesus taught and ministered. It also highlights the significant role of religious teachers in Jewish society and the recognition of Jesus as a respected teacher, even by those who did not fully understand His divine identity and mission.
